Why Your Childhood Strep Infections Might Still Matter
Did you have recurring strep throat as a kid? Or strep infections during pregnancy?
If so, I want to walk you through something that gets missed constantly in doctor's offices, and it might explain more than you'd expect.
The blood draw versus the swab problem.
Epstein-Barr and strep bacteria co-infect together in roughly 80% of strep throat cases. That's not a small overlap. That's the majority.
Here's why it gets missed so often. When you go in with a sore throat and swollen glands, a strep swab is fast and cheap, and it gives an answer in minutes. Testing for Epstein-Barr requires a blood draw with four specific titers, and most doctors won't run it unless you ask. So in practice, you get swabbed, it comes back positive for strep, you get antibiotics, and everyone moves on. Nobody ever checks for Epstein-Barr, because the strep result already gave the room an answer.
Why one infection hides the other.
An answer isn't the same as the whole answer. If you had strep once, or many times, growing up or as an adult, that's one of the clearest patterns I look for in someone who might be dealing with chronic Epstein-Barr and never knew it. The two infections travel together often enough that finding one should make you curious about the other, not settled.
This pattern shows up with other conditions too. As one example, research has found Epstein-Barr present in the thyroid tissue of a large majority of people with Hashimoto's, compared to essentially none in people without it. Individually, none of these findings prove anything on their own. Together, they're hard to ignore.
Where I'd start
If recurring strep is part of your history, it's worth knowing your actual Epstein-Barr numbers rather than assuming the strep swab told the whole story.
